The Best Board Books for Kids

Ever since our little one was a couple months old we started showing and reading books to her. Now she loves to pull books off her shelf and will happily sit and read them by herself, or up on a lap with an adult. It’s something I think is really positive, that I like to encourage. We head to the library every 3 weeks at the very least, to return our due books and gather another stack of reading material to be perused over the next little while.

 

Now, being a preschool teacher, I’ve come to know a lot of really fantastic books for children. I have all-time favourites, and favourites for specific concepts stored away in my notes and my head to refer to when myself or someone else is looking for a particular book. Most of the books I’m used to reading, however, are for the preschool audience of ages 3-5, so having my little munchkin around has been opening up my world to new books that I haven’t bumped into yet. Specifically, and my favourite thus far, the children’s board books by Sandra Boynton.

Over the last year I’ve come across a large number of these little books. They’ve been given to us as gifts and there are always a few that aren’t checked out when we frequent the library. It seems these Boynton books are very popular with the baby and toddler crowd. If they didn’t seem to be just board books (which is fine for older children, I just usually scope out larger books for circle time), I probably would have come to love them much sooner.

They are funny, the pictures are simple and quite cute, and have a rhythm to the narratives that is easy and pleasant to read and listen to. There’s a lot of animal noises, which my little particularly likes. They’re also generally inclusive of a good message for early learning, as well. I’ve wanted to write children’s books for a while now (it’s on my bucket list and my New Years resolutions for this year), and after finding Boynton, I pretty much just wish I could have written all of hers. They’re perfect!

The books we own of Sandra Boynton’s so far are Moo, Baa, La La La!, The Going to Bed Book, Pajama Time, Happy Hippo, Angry Duck, and little Z’s absolute favourite – Doggies. I love reading these to my babe, and she obviously likes them, too, as she’ll often pick them out and bring to us to have read. (Those are affiliate links, just so ya know.)
