Going Green is Naturally Beautiful – #GMCBeauty

With October in full swing, you may have noticed pink ribbons flying around in amongst our fall colours. In this month of Breast cancer Awareness, you’ll likely be asked to consider all of the women (and let’s not forget the men, either) who have been faced with the terrifying prospect of a breast cancer diagnosis. So many of us have been touched by this life-changing diagnosis, whether it was our own or that of someone we know and love. I know too many people who have struggled with this, the most impactful being my own mother, who lost her fight with the big C three years ago.

I never want anyone else to experience the pain and grief that myself and my family endured as we watched our mother slip away. I want to lessen the chance that others have of experiencing their bodies being taken over by pain and suffering from breast cancer. That’s why, instead of pink, I’d like to turn your focus to another colour this month: Let’s focus on green.

Going Green with My Beauty Routine

Nobody knows the beauty of green quite like mother nature.

While many companies are selling pink products this month, what you may not realize is that many of these products contain toxins that are actually linked to breast cancer. Unfortunately, I have experienced first hand how difficult it can be to attempt wading through the seemingly never-ending list of ingredients – many of which I can’t pronounce or understand – in an attempt to choose something that not only claims to be “green”, “safe”, “natural” or “pure”, but actually is all of these. This is made even more difficult when an impatient toddler is nipping at your heels and yanking everything off the lower shelves as you attempt to read what appears to be a foreign language.

For those of you who have been following along with my recent quest to declutter using the KonMari method, you already know that I’ve been reserving space in my home and my life for only the things that I really feel passionate about and spark joy in me. Going through my bathroom cabinets, cupboards and drawers, I found myself filling bag upon bag with products that I had been hoarding that were chock full of chemical toxins. By the end of my purge of these beauty and hygiene products, I was left with very few items. It feels amazing to be rid of all that garbage, and to feel free to now invest in only the products that I will actually use, and feel positive that I’m making healthy choices as to what I’m putting on (and ultimately in) my body.

Let’s shed some light on beauty product secrets.

The experiences above – my personal understanding of what it means to lose someone to breast cancer, along with the relief and joy I feel for moving to a greener beauty routine – are why I am positively thrilled to announce the Green Moms Collective 2nd Green Beauty Campaign. Throughout October I will be a part of this campaign to raise awareness and understanding of healthier practices when it comes to your beauty routine. There is a lot of awesomeness coming, and a ton of prizes to be given away, so make sure to keep an eye out for the fantastic posts and events coming up!

Along with the other contributors, I will be sharing information with you about green beauty practices and products that will make you feel confident that when you clean, moisturize, and otherwise beautify yourself, you’re not sabotaging your body and your health by using toxic products that easily absorb themselves into your skin. We will be helping you recognize which ingredients are the most important to avoid, teach you how to choose better beauty products, and aid you in finding the confidence to toss out the toxins in favour of healthier beauty practices. To start you off on this journey to greener beauty pastures, check out this post on auditing your beauty products, and make sure you take a look at this incredible resource: The Green Moms Collective Green Beauty Guide. Trust me, you won’t regret signing up to receive this free 8-page booklet that will help you clean up your beauty routine.

Thank you, Ashley. It certainly wasn’t easy, but it’s over now. We’re all thankful she doesn’t have to deal with the pain any more.

It’s a shame that you need to have some fear in order to make changes to your life that will help lower your risks. I think fear and the stress and anxiety is a big part of the problem, too. Hard to find the balance of being relaxed while being aware. About everything in life, really.
