Ask a group of people what their experience of school and what their grades were like, and you’re sure to receive a variety of different answers. Some students will struggle with certain subjects, others feel like failures at academics in general, while some students seem to float through their studies effortlessly, bringing home A’s in everything they do. It’s so hard to be or watch someone who’s suffering through school, just not able to pick up what the teachers are putting down, despite the time and effort spent in class and reviewing materials.
The sad part about seeing someone struggle with learning is that it’s not just their report cards that are suffering. I remember sitting in the library during my university career, spending long, painful hours trying to make any sort of sense out of a calculus course. I felt this sinking feeling that I would never understand how all the letters, numbers and symbols were supposed to be sorted out. While others in my class would find their “aha” moments, mine seemed like it would never come. At one point I broke down. With tears in my eyes, I decided I was going to drop the course that I needed to pursue the career I had dreamt of. I felt like such a failure for not being good enough to learn something that others were obviously picking up on with no problem. I felt depression for seeing my dreams wither up in front of me. While calculus and mathematics wasn’t directly what I wanted to study, it’s such a strong piece of many different career choices, and was necessary to continue forward with my studies.
My self-confidence plummeted. My motivation was shot.
I was thankful that, with the generous help of classmates and family (luckily, I was living with my brother – an engineer with a strong grasp of math), I was able to push forward and eventually wrapped my head around the information I was struggling to take in. It wasn’t much past this point of so nearly giving up that it all clicked. But what if I hadn’t had the help? What if I gave up, dropped the class, and succumbed to a feeling of failure, thinking I just wasn’t good enough? How would this affect the rest of my life?
I truly believe that we all have the ability to be strong learners. We all possess the potential to do and be what calls to us, but sometimes our learning styles stand in the way of success when it doesn’t match up properly with the method in which the information is taught.
What if every child had the opportunity to experience information in the best way for them to learn it?
It’s no secret that each person has a particular learning style. The unfortunate thing is that not every teacher is prepared to teach their classes of 20-30 students in a way that speaks to each of the individual learning styles. This leaves some students, whose learning styles differ from that of the teaching style provided, in the dust.

There are, however, the resources out there to fill in the gaps between school instruction and learning success for those students who are struggling. This is why I’m so pleased that the Menlo Park chapter of Axiom Learning contacted me to see if I would be interested in sharing with you what they have to offer. I love being able to use my on-line voice to help spread information and resources that others can benefit from, and this brilliant brand falls right into the sphere of things I feel good telling others about.
Axiom Learning is a tutoring agency founded by parents who were frustrated with the one-size-fits-all approach to education, and held the belief that every student deserves an educational experience that works with their individual needs, learning styles, and objectives. The intent – which I love! – was not to ensure entrance into top universities, as these parents had experienced themselves, but rather was built on the desire to give all students the opportunities and choices that come with being able to pursue whatever they want, and having the skills to succeed.
With many years spent researching educational methods, figuring out what works for who, and hiring the very best of the best instructors, Axiom Learning is confident in their ability to create individualized educational programs for every student who comes to them for help. Backed by a Board of Advisors from Harvard, the Gates Foundation, McKinsey and a number of others, the founders of this business recognize the drawback to the current educational system and hope to transform the way that education is delivered. They have based their methods on research and real, solid evidence of success with customized learning plans.
If you or your child are trying to improve grades in Math, English or Science, have a young child who is struggling to learn to read, or are eager to ensure entrance into an Ivy League school such as Harvard, Axiom can help you reach your goals through an individualized program developed on your specific needs and strengths. There are a variety of locations that Axiom Learning can provide individualized 1-on-1 tutoring for. If instruction in your specific area isn’t offered at this time, I would still encourage you to take a page from this business’s book and attempt to seek out a tutor who is willing to explore different instructional methods to help figure out your child’s needs and strengths, and how they learn the best.
The Axiom Learning location in Menlo Park, California, is eager to help students succeed in math (let’s face it, this is a common problem area for a lot of people), or any other subject where 1-on-1 instruction could make a huge difference in that student’s life. If you are in this area, I encourage you to visit the Menlo Park tutoring website to find out more about how you can start seeking success with their tutoring services. There are also a variety of other locations, which you can check out here.
Remember, we all have a brilliance inside of us. Let’s do our best to find the help we need to make that brilliance shine!

Love the idea of individualized learning. I have five kids and they all have different learning styles. Between my husband and I we have been able to help them. But, as they get older I often wonder if we need extra help. I’ll have to keep this post in mind. Thanks for sharing!!!
